Monday, February 26th Fiadh Productions welcomes The Wretch with two releases. First up - “Filaments” is 8 tight tracks fusing atmospheric black metal with breakcore, synthwave and post punk alongside a narrative flow mined from film reels. This album explores the arc from failure to resolve to conclusion. To give Filaments context, “Embers” is a collection of tracks from the first 20 years of the project - a wild ride through cinematic industrial breakcore punctuated by strong melodic and textural exploration and an irreverent use of archival public film reel samples. These tracks formed the foundation for self-reference in moving towards a revived sound for the new album.

20 YEARS OF BREAKING - From the beginning, The Wretch was about broken things, mismatched ideas and chaos. Exploring digital and analog distortion, sampling, and heavy handed editing of disparate sound sources, The Wretch took form as a hybrid of breakcore, industrial, IDM, and any other influence that Michael and involved collaborators brought to the sessions.

The earliest albums were explorations in frenetic cut and paste of archival film reels, mixed with hyper-edited drums and warped synth lines. As the project matured, the concept began to turn inward, leading to the addition of vocals and more personal content in lyrics and titles. Ultimately, the fourth LP, When I Fall, became an amalgamation of all of the disparate ideas Michael had - a superset of the music he had to get out.

The project lay dormant for years, but the unique voice called Michael back. In 2021, work began on LP5 with the first real demo - The Fire Inside - but first he had to look back to see what the history of the project meant to him. This is the instrumental vision of The Wretch through the lens of time, leading us to today.

The Wretch is Michael Weeks, also featuring Darren Halm, Eric Schlappi and a host of assorted guests.
