"Since the genre and phrase were first coined, "black metal" has been co-opted and utilized by varying artists with drastic results - all with the singular purpose of exploring the bleaker side of existence in heavy music. From the big and boisterous anthems of Venom to the punk dirge of Bone Awl, to the melodic assault of Deafheaven - we see black metal has no one sound, and belongs to the people who craft it. To those who need it to channel the darkness in their hearts.

Terms like TRVE, RAW, KVLT, and DEPRESSIVE are some of the key genre tags associated with the black metal sound (let's take a moment to pause and say FUCK YOU to NSBM) - but what generally holds them together are specific sonic characteristics: Speed. Grit. Texture. Dissonance. Anguish.

With "Certain Rapture", Nick Hertzberg’s second release as Hexenschorf (following a quickly-sold-out debut on Grime Stone Records in 2022), he commits to summoning these desolate invocations of black metal past present, and future sonically while treading lyrically in ways that some may scoff at but he thinks the true-true, those who turn to this artform to express their pain, will appreciate.

On the album single "Passes Over Me," we hear of the desire to trade places with the dying because they deserve to be here still. In "Standing Tall," Hertzberg channels the frustration he felt as he failed to speak up to friends making racist remarks. With "Your Gimmick," we hear a Venom-esque heavy metal riff accompanying shit-talking on those who co-opt imagery and beliefs of dark music lifers. And on "Hand of God," where the album gets its namesake, we imagine a future where all Christian Nationalists awaiting the second coming are instead met by Lucifer and are struck down, not saved, for their disgusting behaviors here on Earth.

"Certain Rapture" comes as a sort of trilogy closer for recent solo black metal albums by Hertzberg. With a debut from the noisy/raw project DÜSTERNIS (on the label My Cult) in March, and the synth-laden CERAMIC VEINS "II" (on Realm and Ritual) in April, this full-length ten-song offering is the perfect way to close out this run on the always forward-thinking New York label Fiadh Productions.
